You all have heard this saying since childhood “Health is Wealth”. Whether it is having food or maintaining a certain lifestyle, our guardians, friends and family have advised you to choose between these life pillars. But do you have to compromise between these two while having Cakes and Bakes? 

When it comes to cakes, what does it take to create the perfect, most delicious cake or dessert? And what do you truly experience while bringing home a treat that promises pure indulgence? This is where we are here to unravel this little mystery about your favourite dessert or cake.

When you enter a bakery and pass by a pastry section at your buffet, you are often attracted by the appearance of them and before you know it, you grab a bite and realise it's not up to your expectations. And it's already in your system! Be it your favourite Black forest cake or Vanilla cake or The Delight “Red Velvet” often contains artificial colours and flavours which contains harmful chemicals such as Sorbic Acid and Potassium Sorbate which leads to skin irritation in case of allergies. Dyes like Rodamine-B are infamous for the use in street foods like “Gobi Manchurian” or cakes like “Red Velvet” to bring the attractive red colour to the food are more likely in the spotlight as it is feared as carcinogenic. Recently, in 2024, Karnataka food safety department had prohibited the use of artificial colours in food. There are other food dyes revolving in the market like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine which are labelled as carcinogenic, if not used in prescribed safe limits. Research has shown that certain artificial colours may elevate the chance of cancer.

Some bakeries use premixes. Why not? As it saves time and cost and does not require too much hassle to make your delicious cake ready. Back in the 1930s, premixes were made with essential ingredients like— flour, molasses, sugar, shortening and powdered eggs. But today’s commercial cake premix contains preservatives— Propylene Glycol, which is also used in e-cigarettes and antifreeze! Scary, right!

We live in an era where maintaining a certain good lifestyle requires a balance between demand and desire. With the increase in concern around oil used in cakes, most cheap bakeries use palm oil in the form of solid hydrogenated vegetable oil. But who says no to chocolate cake in your office celebrations or your loved one’s special day or celebrating your happening life events? No one! But use of palm oil in bakes is widely credited to the presence of high saturated fats, trans-fat which is bad for your heart and insulin regulation. Many use Margarine— once marketed as a healthier alternative to butter, but not all margarine are created equal and are considered harmful to health, especially older and hydrogenated types. Here trans-fat is the real villain. Again! not good for you and your loved ones. Do we really check these facts before having any pastry? Don’t think so!

Now imagine you are sitting at your desk and suddenly you remember it’s your kid’s birthday today and he likes Spiderman the most (He likes you the most though!). Healthier alternatives are Buttercream (in moderation), Whipped cream (not soy-based chemicalized whipping cream) and Natural fruit glazes.
