Diwali: The Festival of Lights and making it memorable

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. As per legends, Diwali marks the victorious return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, and the celebration of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.

While the essence of Diwali remains the same, its celebrations differ across various regions of India. In North India, people light oil lamps, burst firecrackers, and decorate their homes to welcome Lord Rama. In West India, particularly in Gujarat, Diwali coincides with the start of a new business year, with families performing special prayers to seek blessings for a prosperous year ahead. In South India, the festival is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, marking Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. Meanwhile, in East India, particularly in West Bengal, Diwali is celebrated as Kali Puja, worshiping Goddess Kali to destroy evil forces.
